Back from OC
Journal Entry: Tue May 15, 2007, 8:35 PM
OC Surf: One live nassarius and one very small and also very dead sand crab.
Assateague Surf: Two small unidentified crabs (one possibly a european green, other is some type of cancroid, looks a lot like a dungeness, which shouldn't be in this area). ~10 slippershells scraped off of washed up horseshoe crab carcasses.
Isle of Wight: Muddy water, shredded algae, nothing interesting except a beached horseshoe crab that looked dead at first. Put it back in the water after flipping it over twice and seeing it start moving around. No black mud nassarius, no killis in the open water, no observed ghost shrimp, no observed amphipods - what the hell? Fiddler crabs were all hiding despite low tide, didn't keep any. Several seedlings of odd salt marsh plant taken.
Assateague inland bay: Lots of dead nassarius-esque shells, pale brown, didn't see any live ones. Spotted only one live blue crab out of reach of net. Lots of fish fry, I probably should've netted them AFTER the drive on the beach.
OC Inlet: Mussels and algae and Asian Shore Crabs everywhere. Also Atlantic Oyster Drills, didn't bother taking any of those. Took small handful of mussels, one large piece of sea lettuce, some stringy red macroalgae, and a few pieces of brown kelp-looking macroalgae. Big purple sea star. Purple sea urchin that wasn't looking very good when I found it and may or may not be dead now. Managed to dislodge one sea anemone, which is now in the process of re-anchoring itself. Found one very large clam which was wedged into place between some rocks by mussels. Collected some of the larger Asian Shore Crabs, two are carrying eggs. Also found more of the dungeness-looking crabs, one of which is ~5 across the carapace. Managed to shake into bucket dozens of amphipods of at least four different types, of which all but two died in the span of about six hours since everything caught at the OC Inlet was in a single bucket, and the water was yellow when I got back. Crab pee, I guess. Making note to have two buckets next time.
Also found what I guess is a terrapin (a bit close to sea for a terrapin, but I haven't any other ideas, and it looks pretty close) of some sort sitting around among the rocks. Bothered it a bit, but strong claws and cramped space prevented me from pulling it out of its cave for a closer look so I left it alone after that. Shell length on the order of 8 inches, maybe more.
Not much interesting at all until low tide at the inlet today. Probably spent over half of this trip sleeping. Was hoping for more surf nassarius, hermit crabs, and a sand crab or two. Now to see about where to send photos of dungeness lookalike to get confirmation.

Are you sure it's supposed to be fuzzy? Cause I'm pretty sure metal shouldn't do that...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
